IMPORT SURGES OF DAIRY PRODUCTS INTO THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION
For the period from January to August 2019, total imports of dairy products have increased by 10-40 per cent (depending on the category) compared to the same period of the previous year. The reason is a lack of own primary produce in Russia. Russians shift their focus to products without milk fat replacers. By the way, palm oil imports have decreased by 1.5 per cent for the same period. Belarus is the main importer of dairy products into Russia. National Dairy Producers Union (“Soyuzmoloko“) says “The major exporter of dairy products for us is Belarus. This year, restrictions on the supply of butter against several enterprises were lifted. We just don`t have enough own milk. Milk and dairy products self-sufficiency of the domestic market amounted to 84.2 per cent last year.” Growth of domestic production is every year. And, mainly because the consumption of dairy products is declining, there will be a “meeting” of two trends one day – our country will have the dairy products self-sufficiency.
